What Will My Organic Garden Design Look Like?

First and foremost, Homefront Farmers’ organic gardens are beautiful. Handcrafted from the highest quality materials and designed with timeless aesthetics, you will be thrilled to have your vegetable garden be a part of your landscaping. Our raised-bed garden designs can be built to whatever size you like and also be adapted to work on a sloping grade. We configure the raised garden beds to maximize space efficiency and ensure all parts of the garden are easy to reach. This in turn also enables the best layout of the irrigation system as well as aesthetic appeal. Fencing is a requirement to keep out the three main garden pests— deer, woodchucks and rabbits. Our residential garden fences are high enough to discourage deer, the openings are small enough to keep out rabbits, and the underground wire mesh keeps digging animals from entering. Homefront Farmers’ gardens include cedar posts, caps, rails and beds and features an exterior “window box” bed in the design. More details on these features are below.

Our considerations in configuring the garden beds to your needs include space efficiency, ensuring that all areas are easy to reach throughout the garden, an efficient layout of the irrigation system and aesthetic appeal.

Our garden design includes an exterior “window box” bed. This feature functions as a place to plant crops such as garlic and onions that naturally deter non-beneficial insects, flowering herbs that attract beneficial insects and also serves as a deterrent to deer (who have poor depth perception and are confused by it). The exterior bed also enhances aesthetic appeal by breaking up some of the fence height.

There are several size options for a Homefront Farmers organic garden. Some factors you will want to consider are the desired space, the types of crops and how much food you want your garden to yield. If space is at a premium, using trellises can maximize the growing area and add to the beauty of your garden. A trellis or eastern facing wall with Maypop passionflower provides fruit and shade in the hot summer months and will die back to allow much needed sunlight through winter. Certain crops such as beans, greens, tomatoes and cucumbers provide a large amount of produce in limited space while favorites such as broccoli, cabbage and winter squash require larger spaces to grow.

Yields are primarily dependent on sunlight and on timely, appropriate harvesting of your vegetables. Many crops will stop producing if they are not being harvested. Homefront Farmers can help you learn when and how to harvest for best crop yield, or we can do it for you and deliver the bounty to your doorstep.

At Homefront Farmers, we believe our mission–helping people to grow their own food–is vitally important. So we’ll always work with you to identify the perfect organic garden design to suit your needs, aesthetics and budget. Many people customize their home gardens, so costs can vary from those shown.

Given the wide variety of potential vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, fruit trees and bushes available for your organic garden, all seeds and transplants are priced individually based on the plants you select.

Prices for annual maintenance of your organic garden are comparable to other property care such as lawn mowing and are customized to fit the garden design size and crop plan. If you don’t have a suitable yard but have a sunny terrace, don’t worry! We can get you growing. Our beautiful cedar planters were designed just for that purpose. Measuring 24” x 48” x 24” the all cedar planter provides a significant amount of growing space in a small area. So you can grow tomatoes, herbs, lettuce, carrots—you name it. We can even irrigate them for you so you never have to water them.
